Behind every Hero- the top 10 Disney Villains
I’m a bad guy person, always have, always will. No matter how cool the hero is, to me the bad guy is always cooler. They get the cooler songs, look cooler and don’t have to abide by the rules that the hero has to abide by.
This is especially the case in Disney films. While The Heroes are there to relay the films message to the kids, the Villain is definitely more entertaining. So this column is going to run down the top ten Disney Villains, according to me. Well, let’s get cracking shall we?
10. The Villain- Randall The Movie- Monsters Inc (2003)
The Reason- In a world where The Monsters are friendly, Randall is the bad boy chameleon who tries to stop hero’s Mike and Sully. Not only does Randall look scary he is voiced by the every so creepy Steve Buscemi, which just adds to his villainy. What’s more Randall plans to save Monsters Inc by kidnapping children and extracting all the scream out of them. If that’s not an evil Villain, I don’t know what is.
Villain Movie Moment- The chase through the teleporting doorways is iconic Disney Villain moment
.
9. The Villain- Oogie Boogie The Movie- Nightmare before Christmas (1993)
The Reason- Similar to Monsters Inc, Nightmare features hero characters that would normally be villains. This, makes the wickedly scary Oogie Boogie even more terrifying because the badest of the lot. From his ghost like physique to his bellowing voice Oogie Boogie screams (sometimes literally) Villain. Also, the guy tries to kill Santa Clause. Can you get anymore evil than that?
Villain Movie Moment- If strapping Santa Clause to a Halloween torture chamber and singing camply while torturing him isn’t a quality of a great Villain, I just don’t know what is.
8. The Villain- Maleficent The Movie- Sleeping Beauty (1959)
The Reason- As Villains go Maleficent is definitely one of the most evil. Maleficent curses the princess just because she has been snubbed by the King and Queen. Ultimately petty and ultimately evil. Pure Villainy at its best. What’s more, like most of the characters on the list , Maleficent’s appearance screams evil. From the way she walks to the coldness of her voice.
Villain Movie Moment- Maleficent turns herself into a dragon to fight Prince Phillip.
7. The Villain- Hopper The Movie- A Bugs Life (1998)
The Reason- Even though the film is slightly underwhelming by Pixar’s huge standards. There is one thing that stands out. That is bad guy Grasshopper, Hopper. Hopper is a bully, selfish and aggressive. Three qualities of a great Villain. Also, being voiced by Kevin Spacey definitely helps as the man’s voice just screams Villain.
Villain Movie Moment- When you threaten to squash your opponents head with your own foot, you definitely know you’re a Villain.
6. The Villain- Devil The Movie- Fantasia (1940)
The Reason- When the Devil is in a Disney film, you can’t really leave him off a top ten villains list. He is the Devil after all. Only, in a short segment, the Devil screams evil. He sets his minions on the world and cause havoc. The terrifying score only adds to the Villainy of the Devil, with its low beats with every evil action.
Villain Movie Moment- The whole segment. He is the Devil after all.
5. The Villain- Hades The Movie- Hercules (1997)
The Reason- Like the last one, Hades is lord of the underworld so is automatically an awesome villain just for existing. However, unlike the Devil in Fantasia, Hades is more camp than he is brooding. Cracking jokes and speaking in rhyme, Hades isn’t the scariest of Villains. However, he is still ultimately Evil, doing anything in his power to stop Hercules.
Villain Movie Moment- Hades watches on as Hercules fights the Hydra, eagerly waiting for him to die.
4. The Villain- Dr. Facilier The Movie- Princess and the Frog (2009)
The Reason- Despite being quite a recent addition to the list, Dr Facilier is just as scary as the Disney Villains that precede him. Using the spirits to do his dirty deeds and manipulating people so he can succeed is Villainy 101. Something Facilier is great at. To further this, A Villain can’t really be a Villain if he doesn’t have a good song and Dr. Facilier has a great song.
Villain Movie Moment- The final graveyard scene is definitely one of the scariest in recent Disney History and cements Dr. Facilier’s spot on the list.
3. The Villain- Jafar The Movie- Aladdin (1993)
The Reason- Just squeezing into the top three is aid to the Arabian thrown, Jafar. Jafar is another manipulative coward. A trait all great Disney Villains have in abundance. Also, Jafar’s evil posterior and desire to rule the world adds to his Villainy. However, the coup- de- grace, is turning yourself in to an all powerful Genie just to achieve this goal. A true Villain if I’ve ever seen one.
Villain Movie Moment- Jafar shows Aladdin and all of us ‘how ssssnnnaaakkkee like he can be’ by turning himself into a twenty foot python.
2. The Villain- Scar The Movie– The Lion King (1994)
The Reason- Scar has all the characteristics of a truly Evil Villain. He’s cowardly, he’s sneaky and he will do whatever it takes to get in power. Enlisting Hyenas as henchman and manipulating everyone in the pride land to become King, Scar has it all. What’s more, if you kill your brother and make it look like an accident, while also getting rid of the heir to the throne, you have to pretty Evil.
Villain Movie Moment- ‘long live the king’ Scar shouts at Mufasa before dropping him to his doom.
1. The Villain- Queen The Movie – Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
The Reason- Well being one of the original Disney Villains helps. But the reason the Queen tops our list, is because how determined she is. Does she let Snow White go? No. She will do anything to hunt her down and kill her. And Why does she try to kill Snow White? Because a magic mirror tells her Snow White is prettier than her? Aah true Villainy at its most petty and it’s most evil.
Villain Movie Moment- The Queen turns herself into an old woman in a terrifying transformation that scares this writer to this very day.
