TV Show(down): Castle vs. Bones

TV Show(down): Castle vs. Bones

Hi folks. This week I’m debuting a new article. Each week I’m going to compare two similar(ish) TV shows. I will give a brief rundown of both shows discussing both their pro’s and their con’s, finally deciding which one is better.

So our first Issue of TV Show(down) is between the two front runners of the unconventional detective story pitting Fox’s Bones against abc’s Castle.

Showdown Rundown:

Bones stars Emily Deschanel, older sister to Zooey as Temperance Brennan, an anthropologist at the top of her field and David ‘no longer angel’ Boreanez as Seeley Booth, a straight laced ex sniper FBI agent who partners with Temperance to investigate murders where bones are visible.

Castle stars Mr Charisma Nathan Fillion as the titular Richard Castle, a famous crime novelist who persuades his good friend the mayor to let him research and follow Stana Katic’s Kate Becket for his new book series.

The Pros

Bones is a pretty sophisticated and a rather graphic detective story. Temperance and her team of super geeks are pretty intellectual, which enables all sorts of weird and interesting story lines. Also, the partnership of Deschanel and Boreanez is pretty good, making you believe their relationship could be as real off-screen as it is on.

Castle, while having a similar ‘unlikely duo’ premise, is quite different to Bones in tone. While Bones pulls no punches with its graphic bodies and stories, Castle hits on a more personal level, being witty and rather emotional in parts. However, the best bit of Castle is by far Fillion, who smacks with his trademark
personality. He could play a broom and make it entertaining.

The Cons

Bones can drag a little in parts. The set-up is always good, and there are some interesting plot points along the way, but some episodes, the show falls flat towards the last third, with the climax feeling a little flat.

Castle’s climaxes are normally fine. It’s the predictability of Castle that lets it down. Throughout, all four season, I have probably guessed correctly who the killer is about 85% of the time.  It feels like they concentrate on the emotional connections too much, causing the actual cases to be a bit too obvious.

The Conclusion: I’ve not made it easy for my first issue. This has taken a lot of time to decide a conclusion. Whereas, both shows aren’t that taxing, I do enjoy the both. Fillion nearly scraped it for Castle. However, I think I’m going to have to give this week’s win to Bones, due to the fact that Castle is just a little too predictable.

Our Winner: Bones.

Thanks for reading.

As I said earlier, this is a new article, so please put any suggestions on how it could be improved below.
Until next time, enjoy the show.
