Star Spotlight: Ryan Gosling

Star Spotlight: Ryan Gosling

This is the first of a new article I’m going to try. It will take a look at the actors who are currently making waves at the moment, giving opinions on their recent performances and evaluating whether I think there just a flash in the pan or have a bright future.

Once a Rom-Com heartthrob, there is arguably no one hotter (in more ways than one) in Hollywood than Ryan Gosling this year, who is quickly becoming king of the Indies. This year alone Gosling has hard critical success with Blue Valentine, Festival success with Drive and now stars in what could be an Oscar contender in George Clooney’s political thriller: The Ides of March, not to mention staring in the Steve Carrel Rom Com: Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Ryan’s schedule isn’t getting any easier, with Only God Forgives, Lawless, Gangster Squad and The Place Beyond the Pines all in the Pipeline. The recent change in film is a bit of a U-turn from Gosling’s earlier films such as Tissue’s at the ready drama- The Notebook and the Disney American Football movie, Remember the Titan’s. I’m not saying these performances weren’t good, they were and both films are enjoyable for various reasons. However, both movies seem to lack the punch his latest movies contain.

Why has Gosling’s stock risen so fast in the last year or so? Yes, I think his performance alongside Michelle Williams in Blue Valentine helped, but to me the ball on Gosling’s career had already been rolling, due to the excellent performance he gives in indie fanfare and Award nominated movie, 2007’s Lars and the Real Girl.

Before Lars came out, Gosling had disappeared for a while, not having much success since the notebook and was subsequently labelled as a ‘heart throb’. However, the performance that was given by Gosling in Lars was something quite extraordinary.

Gosling plays the titular Lars, who is a socially awkward but loveable member of the community. However, one day Lars introduces his new girlfriend to his brother and sister in law, and to the whole town. There is only one problem; Lars’ girlfriend is a Sex Doll.

Gosling plays Lars as realistic as possible, giving depth and feeling to what could be quite a farcical movie. Sure, the script of Lars is good and the other performances are great across the board, its Gosling’s Lars who is the charming heart and soul of the movie and definitely was a showcase of what Gosling can actually do.

Do I think Gosling’s current success will last? Well considering that he has been pretty good in Ides of March, Drive and Blue Valentine, I don’t see why not. What Gosling brings to the table is credibility as well as Charisma. Unlike say Ryan Reynolds, who is undoubtedly charismatic, Gosling has bags of acting talent as well.

I can definitely see Gosling getting a big franchise some time down the line. However, the only thing I think could hold Gosling back from becoming a mega star is the main man himself. If his recent movie choices have any sort of pattern, it’s that their all relatively unknown projects, which makes me think Gosling could prefer the lesser known movie, instead of a big blockbuster.

That being said, Gosling could be a big name, if he wants to be.
What do you think? Don’t see what I’m talking about. Feel free to comment.
