Review Recall: The Lost Boys
We’re staying in the eighties for another Review Recall. Mainly because I love the eighties. I will try and cover other decades, but eighties movies just rock so hard. This time we’re heading to 1987 where Vampires were as cool as comic books and big hair. This week’s Review Recall covers Joel Schumacher’s Vamp movie The Lost Boys.
The Plot: Lucy (Diane West) and her boys Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam (Corey Haim) move to the beach to live with her Dad (Barnard Hughes). As soon as the boys arrive, there is something about the town that doesn’t seem right.
Immediately, Michael is not a big fan of the beach town. That is until he sees Star (Jami Gertz) and falls in love. Star seems to take an interest in Michael. However, there is a problem. Star’s boyfriend David (Kiefer Sutherland) seems to be the town's resident bad guy.
To get the girl and to fit in Michael must befriend David and his cronies. Even if they are Vampires.
The Film: I’m going to get straight to the point. The Lost Boys is one of my movies. We all have them. Films no matter how good or bad they are, we love them all the same. However, during this review I will try to be as unbiased as possible, in marking The Lost Boys as a movie.
That being said, I do think that The Lost Boys is a good movie anyway. For all his faults Joel Schumacher does know how to create an atmosphere. And he does this perfectly in The Lost Boys. From the first few images of the abandoned beach town, to the Goth populated theme park, we instantly get what this film is about.
The Atmosphere isn’t the only good thing about The Lost Boys, as the story works as well. We get what Michael is feeling because it’s a feeling we have all probably had in our lives, the feeling of not fitting in and doing anything to be one of the (lost) boys.
My only problem with The Lost Boys is it’s quite a tad predictable. However, I’m going to chalk that to being saturated with Vampire movies today, causing us to know all the rules when Michael and Sam don’t themselves.
The Performances: The Lost Boys is filled with some of the biggest teen stars of the 80s. All we need is Judd Nelson and Molly Ringwald and we have a reunion. That being said, the whole class is pretty solid and it’s definitely easy to see why Patric and Haim were tipped to be big stars.
However, for me the two starts of the show are Corey Feldman as Vampire conspiracy nut Edgar Frog and Kiefer Sutherland as David, the leader of the Vamp teens who oozes cool with every word.
Verdict: A very good movie only added by the 80s setting. Twilight fan’s take note; this is what Vampire movies should be. 8/10
Thanks for reading.
